New Hellboy Graphic Novel Coming in 2017
Mike Mignola wrote a conclusion to the comic book saga of his most popular character, Hellboy, earlier this year but a new story featuring everyone’s favorite devil-born demon slayer will be back on shelves in 2017. Earlier this week, Dark Horse Comics announced an upcoming original graphic novel, Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea, which will be released in the spring of 2017. Mignola and Gary Gianni are co-writing the book, with Gianni the illustrator and Dave Stewart as colorist.
Paste Magazine was the first media outlet to break the news about the upcoming graphic novel.
A release by Dark Horse described the basic plot:
“Following the events of the classic story ‘The Island,’ Hellboy sets sail from the wreckage of a deserted island only to cross paths with a ghost ship. Taken captive by the phantom crew that plans to sell him to the circus, Hellboy is dragged along by a captain who will stop at nothing in pursuit of a powerful sea creature.”
The release also quoted Gianni, who described it as “Hellboy’s greatest adventure.”
“Yes … it’s Hellboy as you’ve never seen him before, laughing, loving and battling his way across the stormy seas!” Gianni added. “You’ll be thrilled as he faces cosmic forces terrorizing a haunted ship manned by a desperate crew!”
“I imagine
if Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea were a movie, the Hollywood hyperbole would describe it as Hellboy’s greatest adventure,” said Gary Gianni.
This is the third Hellboy original graphic novel to be released.
Mignola released his own farewell — for now, at least — to the chronological tale of Hellboy earlier this year when he concluded the Hellboy in Hell series after 10 issues. Mignola said he was stepping away from the comic and was going to take up painting watercolors on a full-time basis.
The character made his publication debut in 1993. The comics also provided the basis for two Hellboy movies, with the character played by Ron Perlman.
