Does Crossbones Kill Captain America in Civil War? Ask Crossbones!

If you read Marvel’s Civil War comic book mini-series circa 2007-2008, you know how things end for Captain America; a bullet from afar thanks to perpetual Cap foe, Crossbones, and the killing shot inflicted by a brainwashed Sharon Carter. So, with Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War – the live-action translation of the aforementioned source material – hitting theaters May 6th, one has to wonder: will Captain America die at the end of Captain America: Civil War? And if so, who will be responsible for Cap’s unfortunate demise? Crossbones? We know he’s in the film and we’re 99% sure he instigated the conflagration that leads to the Sokovia Accords’ creation, a reactionary imposition of checks and balances for those practicing acts of super-powered, international vigilantism. Hmm, would be great if someone could get an interview with Crossbones. WAIT!

Recently, a number of Civil War creators and cast-members made a stop at Wizard World New Orleans, giving our friends at ComicBook.com a chance to speak with the man himself, Crossbones. Well, technically, it was actor Frank Grillo who plays the part of Crossbones. Regardless, in the above interview, ComicBook.com cornered the man who plays the man who may play an integral part in the final fate of Captain America.

A few highlights from the above mentioned video interview:

Did Frank Grillo know his character would continue beyond Captain America: the Winter Soldier, becoming the instigating element in the forthcoming Civil War film?

“Yes. When we sat down with Marvel, they knew it was an origin story. They weren’t quite sure where they wanted to take Crossbones but they knew they wanted Crossbones in some of these films but they definitely knew that that’s where they were going with the character.

Grillo then elaborated on preparing for the character, and in the midst of this, let slip his actual involvement in Captain America’s speculated demise.

“Before I got the job, I started doing some research and I was look, ‘Oh, this guy’s a bad-ass!’ I don’t know if I’m gonna live but I want to be that guy. I spoke to Brubaker, who created Crossbones. He’s a great dude and I got some of the back issues and stuff and read the origins of Crossbones and where he came from. The thing with Marvel is they don’t always follow to the tee what the character did in the comic books. They use him in different ways. You never know what’s gonna happen. I know Crossbones in the comics kind of offs Cap at some point and we’re probably not gonna see that happen. I’m not gonna kill him yet.”

When asked about Crossbone’s ultimate objective in Civil War, Grillo put it succinctly- revenge.

“Winter Soldier let off and I was in bad shape. I was just about to kill the Falcon – which is not hard. I think revenge is a big part of… Whatever Rumlow was feeling as far as being torn between which side he should be on, which I think he was, is gone now. I think he’s out for one thing and one thing only and that’s to revenge what’s happened to him.”

Captain America: Civil War debuts May 6, 2016, starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, and Martin Freeman.
