Ghostbusters Sequel a Distinct Possibility!
That certainly didn’t take long! Despite not over-performing but not bombing either, Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters took in around a little less than 50 million this past weekend. That is apparently enough is get the ball rolling for a potential Ghostbusters sequel. I guess Sony can finance films on the tears from the internet, right? Joking aside, it seems that Sony always wanted Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters to spawn a franchise.
“The ‘Ghostbusters’ world is alive and well. I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise.” stated Sony President of Worldwide Distribution Rory Bruer. “While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen.” It should be noted though that the Ghostbusters reboot has had the largest opening this year for a live-action comedy movie. Ghostbusters currently sits at around 76% on Rotten Tomatoes and from anecdotal evidence it seems like the movie has been a hit with fans. It is only natural that Sony would want to see a Ghostbusters sequel.
Starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth, Ghostbusters is a reboot of the original which stared Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis. The Ghostbusters sequel will see the new cast return and there is probably a good chance at seeing an old enemy pop back up. Zuul, perhaps? Hopefully they go back and bring back Vigo the Unholy or both. Now’s the time to get cracking on that fan-fiction, right?
