What We Know About the New Mutants Movie So Far
With the growing popularity and excitement over X-Men: Apocalypse, fans of the X-Men franchise have something else to look forward to in the coming years: the New Mutants movie. While this group of heroes that debuted in 1982 is not as mainstream as the first generation of mutants (namely Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey, and the ever-lovable Wolverine), it’s still quite intriguing to see them on the big screen. Here’s what we know about these Xavier school students so far.

The script draft is now complete.
Just a few days ago, the second draft of the New Mutants movie script was completed, moving 20th Century Fox’s X-Men spin-off even closer to reality. Josh Boone from The Fault in Our Stars took to Instagram recently to share the cover of the completed draft. The script is supposedly based on the original Marvel Comics series by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, and both Boone and Knate Lee worked on the script together.

The roster will be a pleasant surprise.
There is an insane amount of characters that can be used in the X-Men universe, and the roster for the New Mutants movie is open to everything. “There’s a very deep bench. There’s a long, long list of names, and I’ll tell you some of the names on that list I don’t even know. That’s how deep it goes,” says Producer Simon Kinberg. Still, because of some New Mutants staples that have already been used in the previous X-Men films, fans will be delighted to see some faves. “Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline X-Men movies. As we are going, I would say it’s likely that you will see some familiar faces,” he says.

It’s all about the YA.
Because the story of the New Mutants movie will revolve around teenage mutants training to be the heroes they were meant to be, there will be a strong young adult vibe to the film. This fresh new take is something we certainly haven’t seen before. “Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script. They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.” Kinberg continues, “That’s the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA vibe to it.”
With the diverse set of heroes in this franchise, can we expect to see Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Karma, or even Colossus’ little sister Magik?
