The Force Awakens Still Climbing in the Box Office!
Despite being out for over a month, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still climbing in the box office. Even though The Revenant has taken the top spot in day to day box office sales, Star Wars is still growing its numbers. Most recently, it claimed the third spot in the overall worldwide grossing movies of all time by passing Jurassic World. They have now pulled within 300 million of Titanic and within 900 million of Avatar; the numbers are looking promising for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. They have already claimed the majority of the box office records and now it is time for them to claim the top prize, the big kahuna of all box office records.
The only thing standing in the way of The Force Awakens in their quest to reign supreme is the Chinese movie market. It was reported yesterday that box office numbers plummeted over 70% in the Chinese movie market. This makes it extremely difficult for The Force Awakens to beat the overall record. Who knows the real reason as to why the numbers dropped, but many are speculating that is was due to the release of the animated feature Boonie Bears 3. Initial reports are mixed with some saying that the movie can still easily beat Avatar while others are highly doubting it. At the very least we have to acknowledge that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will certainly go down in the history books as one of the most successful films of all time. The film holds the majority of the single day and weekend box office records.
Besides the fact that the movie is doing well in theaters, Disney is selling toys like crazy. Star Wars toys were the hottest thing of 2015, generating over $700 million in sales. A good portion of the success of toy sales resulted from the introduction of Rey, according to Reuters. Even though the franchise withheld many toys to avoid spoiling the movie, the toys still sold well.
