It’s been said that Keanu Reeves is already in talks to play Moon Knight, but while many people might be excited to have the John Wick star play a Marvel superhero, not everyone might be privy to who the character actually is. Here are just a few things you need to know about him to add to your MCU pool of knowledge!

  1. He may look like a Batman rip-off, but he’s actually pretty magical.

Moon Knight’s real name is Marc Spector—the son of a rabbi who escaped to the United States during World War II. Moon Knight grew up in Chicago, and has since then joined the Marines, become a heavyweight boxer, and a mercenary to get by.

When he was fatally injured during a gig in Egypt, his spirit met Khonshu, the Egyptian moon god, who healed him and gave him powers to be the god’s embodiment on Earth. Even though he used to just fight as an ordinary human being without any extra abilities, this encounter made him gain powers based on the lunar cycle.

2.  His mind is complicated.

Moon Knight is a pretty cool superhero, but he can be a little unstable though, since he suffers from dissociative identity disorder or multiple personalities. His mental health issues have also brought into question whether or not the whole encounter with Khonshu was actually a real thing.

It all began when he took on two alternate identities (socialite Steven Grant and cab driver Jake Lockley) to allow him to weave in and out of the different social classes for information. Things eventually went a little too far, as he began to actually become the personalities he created. A total mental breakdown even led to new personalities that mimicked Captain America and Iron Man.

3.  He’ll fit nicely with the MCU.

With Doctor Strange as the only other popular magical being in the MCU at the moment, could it be possible that we might see Moon Knight crossing over with the Sorcerer Supreme at some point? Sure, he’s got a public cover as a millionaire (ala-Bruce Wayne, of course), but he’s got his own thing that definitely makes him an interesting addition to the MCU when his upcoming Disney+ series does happen. Fans already have a fanart version of Keanu Reeves as Moon Knight, with casting hunts looking for a male actor between the ages of 40-50. Here’s what the casting description says:

“Spector was a former pugilist, mercenary, and CIA agent. He’s double-crossed by his boss, Raoul Bushman, after they find a mysterious archaeological site, which Bushman planned to loot for his own selfish means. Near death, Spector comes into contact with Khonshu, an Egyptian moon god, who offers him another chance to live, in return for becoming his avatar on this world. Spector accepts the deal and is reborn with superhuman powers. He then returns to the U.S. and accumulates immense wealth after investing his earnings as a mercenary and becomes the crimefighter known as “Moon Knight.”

Spector also created multiple identities, including the alias of millionaire Steven Grant to misdirect people from his mercenary history and Jake Lockley, a low-key taxicab driver that helps him keep a closer ear to the streets and criminal elements.”

We’d say that’s pretty accurate, don’t you think?
