X-Men: Apocalypse’s Sophie Turner Talks About Her Jean Grey Performance

When X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 17th, we’ll see a progression of the particular X-Men narrative initiated with X-Men: First Class and then continued in X-Men: Days of Future Past. In this X-Men timeline – the continuity that survived the events of Days of Future Past and earned its right to continue the X-Men filmic legacy – the X-Men are noticeably younger, mostly untrained and growing up in the tumultuous, mutant-hating 70s and 80s. Citing this variance, our friends at Empire Magazine recently sat down with X-Men: Apocalypse’s Sophie Turner (Jean Grey) and asked her about the difference between her portrayal, and Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey iteration in previous X-Men films.

“The difference between this and Famke’s Jean Grey is she’s young and isolated and so insecure and very alienated — even from the other mutants — because she’s so powerful,” said Tuner. “So there’s a real vulnerability to her and it’s great to see how her and Scott [Tye Sheridan] find each other through that alienation. She’s a great role to play, she’s so much fun, and her arc in the movie is amazing.”

Yes; we’re getting a much younger Jean Grey; a Jean Grey inexperienced with powers and abilities on par with…uh…a super-destructive, space-born, god-like entity that could strangle creation with one, singular, forgettable, fire-born thought. Or something.

X-Men: Apocalypse debuts May 27th, directed by Apocalypse who forces all his human actors to kneel before the relentless, murderous, arbitrary wave of genetic super-evolution!!
