Russo Brothers Slip-Up! Captain Marvel Might Be in Infinity War!
Along with the release of Captain America: Civil War, more great news from the MCU has made its way into the wild. This time it concerns the future of the Avengers, once a certain Mad Titan makes his way into the fold. As it turns out, when Thanos arrives as the next level villain for the Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes may have another friend joining their side. None other than Captain Marvel. Yep, Captain Marvel might be in Infinity War!
The reveal was actually a slip of the tongue by Civil War and Infinity War Directors, the Russo Brothers, during a Q&A session at an event in the Smithsonian attended by Comicbookmovie. Talking about their work on the two-part Avengers: Infinity War (although that won’t be the title for much longer), one of the brothers accidentally blurted out Captain Marvel as one of the characters appearing. That’s when one inquisitive fan morphed into full-on reporter.
“Did you just confirm Captain Marvel?” Russo replied, “Um….Captain Barvel. Totally different character.”
Ah, yes. The timeless Marvel character, Captain Barvel. Should have known it was him all along.
In reality, the Russos (who are probably mentally drained from the constant promotional tour of Civil War) essentially confirmed that Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, will be joining the Avengers sooner rather than later. However, it was not confirmed if she’s showing up in part one or part two. Should it be the former (set for May 4, 2018), then Danvers will be showing up in the MCU prior to her solo adventure scheduled March 8, 2019.
While it’s nice to have conformation, the addition of Captain Marvel should not be a surprise at all. Carol Danvers has had quite a resurgence in Marvel, ever since she dropped the “Ms.” in her title for “Captain” in 2012. Aside from getting her own movie, Captain Marvel will also be a central character in the highly anticipated Civil War II comic series coming out this June. With the push Danvers is getting, you’d have to assume Marvel would want her on the big screen as soon as possible.
So now the obvious question is this: who will be playing Captain Marvel? Could MMA Fighter Ronda Rousey actually campaign herself into the role? What about Sienna Miller and Emily Blunt, two actresses previously rumored for the role? With less than two years from the release of Infinity War Part I, expect someone to be named as the new Carol Danvers soon.
So check off one new name for Infinity War. Maybe.
The Russo’s previously joked about having to choose from 67 different characters in the MCU. While more are going to show up by 2018, we at least have one seat reserved for a potential future star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe… Carol “Captain Marvel” Danvers.
