The feud between the X-Men and the Inhumans is reaching its boiling point, but soon it will become an all-out war for survival in Inhumans vs. X-Men!!
While the X-Men coming to blows with another part of the superhero community is nothing new, there is something about this one that makes it a little more significant. With Inhumans vs. X-Men and another miniseries in the works called Death of X, one question needs to be asked: are the X-Men doomed??!!
Let’s look at the facts. With Marvel and FOX still duking it out over the film rights to the X-Men series, Marvel has been trying to push the popularity of the lesser known Inhumans to fill the mutant void. Since then, the X-Men have been slowly shoved out of the Marvel Comic Book Universe via the uncontrollable spread of the Terrigen Mist. For the Inhumans, it’s what gives them their powers, but when it comes to mutants, it makes them sterile!! Not only that, but it has also spawned a deadly disease called M-Pox!! Both of these things have been driving the mutant species to extinction, which has been fueling the hostility between these two sides! Yikes!!
Probably the most disturbing clue to this would be the preview image for Death of X (below)! As you can see, the top has Cyclops surrounded by dead mutants (friends and foes alike), while the bottom has the Inhumans prospering. This picture might actually be showing us the future, one with a big, gaping, mutant-shaped hole in our hearts!! It appears that no matter what happens in Inhumans vs. X-Men, Death of X might have already shown us the winner!!
Definitely a grim ending compared to the Fantastic Four’s sendoff in Secret Wars!! X-Men fans (myself included) don’t want to believe this is true; nobody wants to see their favorite characters get butchered like this! However, with all this evidence…I think there’s a strong possibility it might actually happen. With Marvel having less incentive to keep them around, it seems someone’s got it in for the X-Men!!
So, is this the end of the X-Men? Well, until we see both Inhumans vs. X-Men and Death of X, we don’t really know. But it really looks like it, doesn’t it?! One thing’s for sure; the Marvel Universe just wouldn’t be the same without them!! No offense to the Inhumans (especially not Ms. Marvel…whose comic I highly recommend), but they have their work cut out for them if they really want to replace the X-Men!!
Until we know what happens to the students of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, let’s enjoy what time they might have left, and prepare ourselves for the worst. Very soon, there may be…. no more mutants!! AAAAH!
