Bringing Thanos Into The MCU Fold

We are two weeks away from The Avengers going head-to-head in Captain America: Civil War. Team Cap vs Team Iron Man will duke it out, with the future of the MCU hanging in the balance. Or so you’d think. We all really know what the future holds… the emergence of Thanos. Yep, the Russo brothers, and Infinity War writers Christoper Markus and Stephen McFeelywill, will be bringing Thanos into the MCU fold, and we here at The Source are choking on the the chunky, garlic peanut butter of anticipation!

It’s HIM!

Once they wrap up their press duties with Civil War, The Russo brothers will begin laying the groundwork for the next Avengers assembling in Infinity War Part I & II. While the Russo’s will get to bring the two part cinematic events to life, it’s the writers Christoper Markus and Stephen McFeely (the writing tandem behind four MCU films including Civil War) who are in the process of putting Infinity War together, including the introduction of The Mad Titan.

Talking with The Huffington Post, the duo talked about bringing “The Avatar of Death” from the shadows, into the spotlight.

“There’s an aspect of, you know, people know what’s coming, so our challenge is how best are we going to handle this somewhat known quantity,” said Markus. “But also he’s barely been touched on. He’s at about 20 seconds of screen time.”

It’s still him!

While it was fun to see Thanos on the big screen (starting with an appearance at the end of The Avengers), McFeely warned that those early introductions could bring immense expectations. So now it’s the production team’s mission to meet – and exceed – those expectations.

“He hasn’t had an amazing scene. I think it’s an advantage ultimately, right? Because people are anticipating this guy coming in and really delivering the goods. So, I think they’re eager, and we just have to deliver it. We don’t have to convince them that he’s gonna be interesting. We just have to execute what has been teased.”

While Thanos may be the big bad wolf that will finally get his time to shine, Markus and McFeely also discussed the idea of how many heroes it could take to stop the alien warlord. The Russo’s once dropped a bomb that as many as 67 characters could show up. That seems like a lot… even for Markus.

“Well, I mean that number is literally — that number comes from the fact that that’s everyone who’s already been introduced. If you line up all the character’s who are available to use from the prior Marvel movies, it racks up to about 60 something characters, let alone the new ones you could bring in.”

Let the Thanos pile-on begin….NOW!

McFeely added, “we had our office filled with cards of everybody who was alive and available, and the brothers came in and went, ‘Whoa.’ So that doesn’t mean that everyone is, you know, there’s not going to be 67 lead parts.”

So while Daredevil, Director Coulson, Iron Fist, Deathlok and others have already graced the MCU, don’t expect to see everybody thrown into the pool. There’s also the off chance that one character or another may not even make it to Infinity War (everyone’s looking at you, Hawkeye). Then again, who says it’s wrong to have 67 different Avengers teaming up in the biggest onscreen showdown in history!!!?? Come on Luke Cage and Quake (from Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D.)… everyone needs to enlist for the Infinity War!

It’s good to be the king!

While whittling the number of Avengers down is important, hopefully Markus and McFeely can do right by Thanos as well. One of the main concerns within the MCU, is the lack of impactful villains. Whiplash, Malekith, Darren Cross, Ronan the Accuser. The list goes on with antagonists who didn’t deliver the goods. Let’s hope they get Thanos right, so by the time Infinity War is thrust upon the silver screen, he truly poses the biggest threat the Avengers have ever seen.
