At the end of Captain America: Winter Soldier, SHIELD was a husk of its former self, having been infiltrated and used as an implement to thoroughly excise, from above, potentially dangerous super-people. Heck, when Steve Rogers decreed that SHIELD needed to be taken down, Nick, although a bit begrudgingly, agreed. Since SHIELD’s apparent dissolution, Nick Fury has been spotted sporadically on occasions where fatherly (and military) advice was necessary to save the day….and advance the plot. So, just where in the HELL is Nick hiding out, and just what, exactly, is the current state of SHIELD? Is Nick coming back? Will SHIELD eventually return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Our good friends at Screen Rant asked Jackson that very question, and his answer was surprisingly definitive.
“Yeah! For sure, definitely. Why wouldn’t there be? There’s some way of fixing what they created, and hopefully somebody has that going on or Nick Fury is out there — wherever he is, probably hanging out with Jules and walking the world — figuring out what happened and how it got to that particular place. Maybe they’ll find out that all that was part of a ruse to get to something else also. That would be great. They’ll bring me back somehow, some way, for some reason. I mean, they didn’t have me around to referee the kids when they didn’t go to their rooms and got in this big old fight. We’ll see what happens.”
But….waitasecond. SHIELD is functioning quite nicely on the ABC network. Isn’t the TV series part of the overall Marvel Cinematic narrative? Yes, yes it is, but there seems to be some kind of…dissociation going on here. Hmmmm.
Anyway, whatever the state of ‘movie SHIELD,’ maybe we’ll see Nick again in Avengers: Infinity War. I mean, it’s kind of a given, considering the whole of existence is on the chopping block.
