Captain Marvel is somewhat of a lesser known character to the general audience. Green Lantern is a moderately known character to the general audience. One character gained their powers from the explosion of a Kree (alien) device and being shielded by a Kree (alien) hero. This explosion caused the Kree powers such as strength and energy to be transferred to the newly created hero. The other hero was given a ring (alien) that harnesses mental energy and creates hard-light projections. There’s nothing to get confused about regarding Captain Marvel’s origin, right?
Apparently not! One of the writers of the upcoming Captain Marvel said that changes can and should be expected when it comes to Captain Marvel’s origin. Why? Because they are worried about too many similarities to the DC Comics’ property Green Lantern! I guess that’s one of the few times you’ll get to say Marvel is worried about copying DC, no? Joking side, it sounds like we might be skipping the alien genesis of Captain Marvel’s origin.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it,” said Nicole Perman, one of the co-writers of Captain Marvel. “She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do.”
She continued, “There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel films and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It has been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.”
So what could that mean? An experiment gone wrong? A super-soldier program? Technology? An intense training regimen by Scott Glenn? Our guess is probably something with one of the Infinity Gems since it has already been established that they can grant powers. Just look at Vision, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver! Plus that would bring her in line with the rest of the Avengers which is surely the intent. Captain Marvel currently has a stated release date of November 2nd, 2018.
