5 Takeaways from Supergirl Season 2 Episode 2:

These are the 5 things that kicked us in the parietal lobe (and sometimes in a good way) as we watched Supergirl Season 2 Episode 2: “The Last Children of Krypton.” And, our observations are a little “spoilery,” so…if you’re catching this tonight, I would bookmark this article and join us tomorrow morning. Still with us? Good, we’re always glad to have ya’.

  1. It’s Super, Man

He wears THIS well!

Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman needs his own series, like….right-the-heck-now. Everything right and good about the Superman character is embodied in Hoechlin. From his charm, his heroic spirit, his easy smile, and his sheer joy in being the Man of Steel — this is the live-action Superman we have been dying for since the days of Christopher Reeve. None of this broody, messianic Zack Snyder nonsense, just pure Curt Swan goodness. You know, like the way it’s supposed to be.

(Dress like Tyler Hoechlin with this fine Superman symbol t-shirt)!

  1. Metal Militia

    Do not test me!

Yeah, we’ve been waiting for a live-action Metallo since, like, forever, and Frederick Schmidt’s John Corben is pretty dead-on perfect. I’m sort of sorry that Corben didn’t feature prominently in more episodes, but it is still a thrill to see a comic accurate Metallo in action. The kryptonite-powered killer seems like a true threat. Yeah, the concept kind of got water down when a second Metallo was introduced, but seeing the Super-cousins fighting for their life against a John Byrne drawing of Metallo come to life? Man, that’s just cool.

  1. Missing Cat

Really, Cat Grant is leaving? I guess Calista Flockhart is the first sacrifice that had to be made thanks to the CW budgetary restraints. It’s going to be hard to imagine Supergirl without the omnipresent Cat Grant. Really, losing Cat is like losing the show’s most vital character. But the departure of Cat isn’t forever as I guess the CW can afford Flockhart for a limited number of episodes. But those weekly visits to Cat’s office are going to be missed.

  1. Snapper Carr?

    Hmmm. I don’t see it.

For those not in the know, Snapper Carr was a former sidekick of the Justice League that just kind of hung around and snapped his fingers. After the Silver Age, Carr all but disappeared, popping up now and again. He was always young and always snapping, and he was never portrayed as a balding, gruff newspaperman. But there he is on Supergirl, a chrome domed version of Perry White. I’m not sure why the Supergirl brain trust went with this version of Snapper instead of just creating a whole new character, but here he is, and Carr looks like he will be Kara’s professional foil. Carr has big shoes to fill if he is going to replace Cat as Supergirl’s domineering work figure, and unfortunately, nothing about his debut popped (or snapped) for me.

  1. Growing Pains

It’s pretty cool that one of the themes so far this season has been the characters trying to take their next steps both personally and professionally. You have Kara in her new job, you have Winn in his newly minted position with the DEO, you have James Olsen taking Cat’s spot as head of Cat CO., and you even have Supergirl easing into her role as full-on superhero rather than hero in training. It makes everything seem fresh and new as we head into The CW era. Winn as DEO’s science guy is really working for me because it makes him so much more than just a classic Jimmy Olsen knock off.
