Check our Out Review [WITH SPOILERS] of Star Wars Poe Dameron #1

If you can tear yourself away from that Star Wars: Rogue One trailer, please give some consideration to Marvel’s new Poe Dameron #1, because boy, does it scratch that lingering Force Awakens itch.
Poe Dameron #1 takes place right before The Force Awakens as Poe and his ever loyal droid, BB-8, are dispatched by General Leia Organa to find the famed Jedi expert, Lor San Tekka. You know, the doomed old scholar taken out by Kylo Ren in the opening beats of The Force Awakens. Listen, any character played by Max Von Sydow is worth more exploration and we get it in this debut issue as Poe and his Black Squadron embark on their quest to find the only man that knows the location of Luke Skywalker.
Somehow, writer Charles Soule is able to channel that Oscar Isaacs charm as the comic version of Poe is every bit as dynamic and swashbuckling as the film version. Soule delivers a cold opening that establishes Poe’s flying skills before he gets into the heart of the issue where Dameron finds a mysterious space-egg protected by some very concerned and openly hostile aliens. To find Lor San Tekka, Poe must convince the egg guardians that he is no threat.
This is Dameron and BB-8’s comic book debut, and Soule is worthy of that responsibility as Poe Dameron #1 is a perfect way to while away the time waiting for Episode 8 to hit. And BB-8 is just as ‘adorbs’ on paper as the droid is on the big screen.
Plus, Phil Noto might be one of the best Star Wars artists in the galaxy. Noto deftly channels his inner Ralph McQuarrie to deliver some hyper-realistic looking space action that screams Star Wars.
Didn’t get enough Poe Dameron in The Force Awakens? Here’s your high-flying fix. A wee bit decompressed (but what isn’t these days- aside form Black Panther #1, that is), but that modern Star Wars excitement is in full effect in Marvel’s latest venture into the galaxy far, far away.
