Fitting Spider-Man Into the MCU

Your friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man is prepping for his chance to team up with The Avengers. Don’t pinch yourself… it’s really happening. Thanks to a deal between Sony and Marvel, Peter Parker gets to join in on the fun when he shows up in Captain America: Civil Warand from early reviews, the webslinger is a scene-stealer.

We are getting a better idea of how Parker will fit into the MCU, thanks to a newly released character bio (don’t worry, it doesn’t spoil anything). Stitch Kingdom used their S.H.I.E.L.D. level credentials to get info on all the Avengers appearing in Civil War. Included at the bottom, a brief background on Spider-Man.

“Peter Parker/Spider-Man — Recruited personally by Tony Stark, teenager Peter Parker aka Spider-Man brings his youthful energy and exceptional — though not totally mastered — skills to Iron Man’s team.”

Fitting Spider-Man Into the MCU
Be patient. He’s Learning.

It’s hard to fathom Spider-Man alongside Iron Man, Captain America and everyone else. Sony seemed comfortable rolling in the absurd amount of cash the character brought in. However, despite The Amazing Spider-Man franchise doing well at the box office, it bombed with critics and fans alike. Sony didn’t care for the hate, which lead to Marvel agreeing to joint custody on one of the most profitable superheroes on the big screen. There was much nerd rejoicing.

The best part, we’re not just getting a one-and-done Spider-Man. He’s not only appearing in Civil War, he’s getting his own solo reboot film coming out July 2017 (with other MCU characters possibly appearing). But, how will Marvel and Sony split this unprecedented partnership?

Fitting Spider-Man Into the MCU
Listen. He only speaks wisdom.

Marvel Studio President Kevin Feige sat down with Collider and discussed how his company will factor into a Spidey solo outing.

“We’re working very much [together]. It is a— I don’t know exactly what the credits will be, but it is a Sony Pictures production of a Marvel Studios film. The agreement was that it is very much a Sony Pictures movie. Amy Pascal is co-producing it with us and [Sony Chairman] Tom Rothman is leading the charge for Sony and that we are the creative producers. We are the ones hiring the actor, introducing him in this film, and then working right now on the script and soon to be shooting the actual Spidey film.”

So basically, Marvel is building the framework of a Spider-Man film, then letting Sony take over the reins to finish the film. Like a couple building Ikea furniture, hopefully with much better results.

It already seems Marvel is on the right track with a Spider-Man story. They are bringing him into the Civil War fold with previously established powers, which already gives Tom Holland’s Spider-Man a bump over Andrew Garfield’s who spent a whole movie learning his skills (despite the promise of an untold story that was never delivered). When speaking of Spidey’s origins, Feige mentioned how they will attempt to incorporate Peter Parker’s famous origins WITHOUT making Spider-Man’s first solo MCU-outing just another origin story.

“We spend a lot of time as we work on these movies saying ‘Don’t take it for granted that the audience saw the other movies or that the audience is as versed in the comic books as we are.’ We take great pains to give you everything you need to know within the context of whatever movie you’re actually watching. However, we did say, if it’s safe to assume anything, it’s safe to assume that everybody knows how Spider-Man became Spider-Man and what that backstory was. We’ve seen it a number of times now, it’s its own well-known mythology. So we said, let’s reveal that there’s been a Spider-Man in the MCU and we meet him, as you see, in [Civil War].”

So, we’re getting the following:

  1. A ready-to-go Spider-Man who is still a bumbling teenager trying to get a hold of his powers in Captain America: Civil War.
  2.  A solo movie, where he’s in a perfect spot to catch enemies in his web. Sounds like the partnership between Sony and Marvel is a web spun in heaven. Ouch!
