When Guardians of the Galaxy returns to theaters next year, a new crop of colorful characters will team up with the remaining cast from Vol. 1, and some of these new characters will be played by MCU newcomers Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone. However, could the door be opened for a current Marvel hero to interact with the crew of the Milano? First, take a look. And then join me in asking the following question: is Thor showing up in GOTG Vol. 2??
Now don’t get your hopes up. Gunn quickly threw water on the Thor flames, posting on his Facebook page that his encounter with Mjölnir was just coincidence.
“No, Thor isn’t in Vol. 2 – the props guy just happened to have it around and I decided to take a pic with it. Not sure if I’m able to lift it because I’m worthy or because I’m soulless like an elevator.”
Well, it appears fans of the thunder god will just have to wait until Thor: Ragnarok (which has a very stacked cast of its own). Bummer. Still, there could always be another MCU character making their way into the Guardians franchise. Should it be a post-credits scene, a quick cameo, or another method, there are plenty of ways to sneak someone in.
And look! It just so happens I created a list of 3 characters that are worthy of showing up in next spring’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
-Hulk
We know Bruce Banner and his giant, green alter-ego will be showing up in Ragnarok, but we still need to figure out how the big guy will make his way into the cosmos. There were also rumblings of a Hulk cameo in GOTG Vol. 2, but Gunn squashed those rumors long ago. Was he just pulling the wool over our eyes this whole time? Will we see Banner’s ascent into space via Guardians?
It could be a simple thing to do. If rumors are correct, Sylvester Stallone is playing a Ravager. Perhaps when the Milano crew interacts with him, we see Sly’s crew hauling something big; something angry; SOMETHING GREEN!!! Maybe we find out Hulk was captured on Earth and is being transported to an unknown destination by Stallone’s crew. It could be a quick cameo that would connect the dots from Age of Ultron to Ragnarok without having to spell it out for the audience.
The problem, however, is that Gunn has been adamant that no current Avengers will be showing up in Volume 2. I don’t think his sequel needs an Avenger just for the sake of it, so let’s take Gunn at his word and say no to any current Avenger. There are still plenty of big fish in the MCU pool that would fit in perfectly.
-The Grandmaster
Much like the quick glimpse of Benicio Del Toro’s Collector in a post-credits scene in Thor: The Dark World, the same could be done with Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster. Again, if rumors prove accurate, Ragnarok will apply elements of Planet Hulk, including the Grandmaster overseeing gladiatorial matches that include Thor and Hulk. Perhaps one Guardians Vol. 2 post-credits scene could include an introduction of Goldblum’s character as he receives a package.
Imagine Stallone and his crew hauling a giant crate. Here comes the Grandmaster to receive it, leading to a quick exchange. It ends with the Grandmaster saying, “Great… another piece for my playground.” Then we hear Hulk’s distinct roar before we see the following bold text:” Hulk Will Appear In Thor: Ragnarok.” Did you get chills? Well, I can do you one better.
-Captain Marvel
Listen, I don’t care if a casting announcement hasn’t been made yet. I really don’t mind if we don’t know who is playing Carol Danvers until later this year. All I know is, James Gunn would be the perfect choice to introduce Captain Marvel to the MCU; he has a knack for bringing space-bound characters to life. I don’t even want to speculate on how it can happen, because my idea would pale in comparison to Gunn’s. Still, it appears we are getting an identity on Danvers sooner rather than later, and even if reshoots are required she needs to be fast-tracked into the Marvel Cinematic Universe… and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is the perfect vessel for her arrival.
